Everybody needs help at some point, but it takes courage to ask for it. Especially if you are in the spotlight. These 13 celebrities rose above their egos to ask for help and are better because of it.
1. Lady Gaga
When Lady Gaga felt everybody was lying and taking advantage of her, she had nowhere to turn and nobody she could trust…except her mom. Her mom helped her get perspective on everything so she could move forward with confidence…to become the superstar she is today.
2. Halle Berry
When the Hollywood A-list actress’ marriage broke up, nothing else mattered—or so it seemed. Halle decided to take her own life sitting in her running car in a closed garage. Thankfully, she had second thoughts. Now she is in therapy and doing better, making movies and being a mom.
3. Michael Phelps
Michael Phelps was in a bad place. In fact, death seemed like the best option. The future gold-medal Olympian instead asked for help and got it. He later went on to become the most decorated Olympian of all time, with 28 medals.
4. Kristen Bell
The popular actress and singer was warned by her mother that mental illness runs in the family. So Kristen sought help when she began experiencing the symptoms of anxiety. Bell got the help she needed to happily continue making movie after movie after movie.
5. Elton John
The singer was on a deadly, downward course with a cocaine addiction. When somebody he knew died, he realized he had two choices: live or die. Then he sought help that turned his life around. Elton says, “Ridiculous for a human being to take 16 years to say, ‘I need help.’”
6. Demi Lovato
When Demi Lovato was 18, her career was skyrocketing. She was also plagued by demons and needed help—which she found on her own. Back on stage one year later, she told her fans that “…you can get help, that you can recover, and it’s possible if you just tell someone.”
7. Kirsten Dunst
She started acting at six years. She was in several hit movies and garnered over 25 awards. But the intense pressure and the hurtful critics got to her. Kirsten realized she needed help. Even though cameras might be watching, she checked into a treatment center. Now she is back to churning out movies.
8. Danny Bonaduce
The former Partridge faced challenges and problems after his childhood career ended. He battled with drugs, homelessness, and the law, but he was determined to stay in “the game.” He sought help from a life coach and has been on track since. He currently has the #1 morning radio show in Seattle.
9. J.K. Rowling
In her twenties, J.K. Rowling was recently divorced, broke, and caring for a young child. She had no prospects for a future. She sought help through cognitive behavioral therapy. This helped her to refocus. She went on to create Harry Potter which has become a massively successful empire.
10. Catherine Zeta-Jones
Catherine Zeta-Jones has her share of box office hits and is in the spotlight. But when she realized she was suffering from biploar II disorder, she not only announced it to fans, she checked herself into a mental facility for treatment. When she left, she started work on her next two films.
11. Lawrence Jackson
Lawrence Jackson was in a bad place when his football career ended. He was in a really bad place. The worst. But he wanted to live, so he called a confidential help-line available to NFL players. This was the first step to getting the help he needed to continue living, happily.
12. Gwenyth Paltrow
After the birth of her son in 2008, Gwenyth suffered postpartum depression. It took awhile and her husband’s urging to seek help, but she ultimately did. The Oscar-winning actress admitted to Good Housekeeping, that “The hardest part for me was acknowledging the problem.” Since then, she’s been in eight movies and is filming more.
13. Jennifer Aniston
In a Glamour Magazine interview, Aniston said that she would tell her younger (30-something) self to go to therapy. She added, “You can undo a lot of things. If you’re not happy, you can become happy. Happiness is a choice.”
