Henry Ford said it best: “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t—you’re right.” If you are confident, you will. And if you are not confident, fake it and watch what happens. That’s what most people do. See how.
1. They Find Their Own Happiness Within
People who seem confident get their satisfaction from their own accomplishments. They don’t wait for others to acknowledge or compliment them in order to feel successful.
2. They Own The Space
When confident people walk into a crowded room, they find a place to stand and believe that space was meant for them. They also find something to look at across the room, that is, through the crowd, in case they feel uncomfortable. This trick allows them to be occupied and appear occupied with purpose.
3. They Don’t Judge Others
Confident people know there is no real benefit to judging others. Instead, they live with the understanding that everybody has positive qualities and has something to offer. This framework allows them to feel good about others without eroding any part of their own ego.
4. They Can Say “No”
Confident people know when to say, “No.” They are aware of their threshold of giving and giving too much of themselves, even at work. They realize that Yes to you means No to my partner/kids/personal time. They are comfortable because their declination has a basis.
5. They Dress For Success
Confident people know that how they dress affects how people see them. They wear clothes and accessories that make them feel good and feel that what they’re wearing makes them look important. Studies prove that people speak differently when they’re dressed up compared to being dressed casually. They also perform differently.
6. They Listen More And Speak Less
Confident people don’t feel the need to prove their intelligence, humor, or experience. They can sit and listen without feeling compelled to speak at every point of a conversation. They also realize they can learn more by listening.
7. They Speak with Certainty
Confident people speak assertively and with certainty. They are also comfortable taking a moment to think before they speak and don’t feel pressured to answer quickly.
8. They Seek Out Small Victories
Confident people challenge themselves with attainable goals, even if they’re small victories. Travis Bradberry explains why: Small victories build new androgen receptors in the areas of the brain responsible for reward and motivation. The rewards motivate them to do more.
9. They Exercise
The Mayo Clinic sums it up nicely: “You may also feel better about your appearance and yourself when you exercise regularly, which can boost your confidence and improve your self-esteem.”
10. They Don’t Seek Attention
Confident people believe in themselves, in their beliefs, and in their abilities. They don’t desire approval or acknowledgment from others and are quick to share praise with team members.
11. They Aren’t Afraid to Learn From Mistakes
Confident people take chances and are not afraid of being wrong. They view mistakes as learning opportunities and not as a threat to their capabilities. They also take responsibility for mistakes because they do not feel threatened.
12. They Take Chances
Fear of failure will not stop a confident person from trying something new or from seizing an opportunity. They view taking chances as chances to grow.
13. They Share The Spotlight
Confident people happily share the spotlight with team members or people who helped them reach a milestone. They know this will not diminish their own achievement but will, in fact, elevate those with whom they share the recognition.
14. They Ask for Help
Confident people ask for help when they need it. Allowing others to help has positive benefits including gaining a new perspective, boosting the other person’s self-esteem, and forging new relationships. They also understand that seeking help makes them responsible, not incompetent.
15. They Have A Sense Of Humor
Confident people do not mind being the butt of a joke. Or, at least, they don’t take it personally, because opposite confidence at the other end of the spectrum is insecurity. Besides being able to take a joke, confident folk can dish it out as well. They are comfortable being silly .
