There’s a joke among smokers. “I can quit anytime. I’ve done it hundreds of times already.” Some celebrities can identify, not being able to kick the nasty habit for good. You’ll be surprised to find out who smokes…and who still smokes.
1. Keira Knightley
With credits like The Phantom Menace and Pirates of the Caribbean, the British actress was quoted as saying, “Those big blockbusters come with a lot of… baggage.” Maybe smoking helps her carry the load.
2. Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez, or J Lo, started on TV before moving to the big screen where her star skyrocketed…then she released an album that went platinum in two weeks. Her position as iconic superstar was secure…as well as her being a shining example of the growing Latin culture in entertainment.
3. Johnny Depp
After starring in the TV series, 21 Jump Street, Depp went on to lead films like Blow and Pirates of the Caribbean and claimed a couple awards plus Academy nominations. He smokes like “a thousand cigarettes a day.”
4. Kate Moss
Capitalizing on her “waif” look, Moss’ star as a model rose after being featured in Calvin Klein’s Obsession advertising campaign in 1993. She later graced over 300 magazine covers and won a Fashion Icon award in 2005. Kate Moss is smokin‘. (Sorry.)
5. Brad Pitt
Did you know Brad Pitt started on the long-running TV show, Dallas. He was Randy. He was also Tyler Durden, Rusty Ryan, Billy Bean and many other characters in his acting career. In this pic, he is answering, “Brad, why do you continue to smoke?”
6. Naomi Campbell
The British-born model began her career at age 15 and broke barriers, becoming the first black woman on the cover of French Vogue at 18, and the first black model on the cover of Time. She’s also gotten into trouble when her temper flares. Chill, Naomi. Have a smoke.
7. Kirsten Dunst
Kirsten earned awards for her breakout role in Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles. She was also named one of People Magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People. We think she looks better without the cig.
8. Keanu Reeves
Keanu starred as Ted in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Neo the hero in The Matrix trilogy. Stardom brings with it no privacy, proved by this photo. Neo is caught pulling a No-No…smoking in a restaurant next to a kid.
9. Sean Penn
Sean Penn loves to surf, oppose war, and smoke apparently. He is the only actor to earn a Best Actor nomination for a Woody Allen film…besides Woody himself. In 2005, he travelled to New Orleans to help the recovery effort after Hurricane Katrina.
10. Elijah Wood
After stopping to sign autographs, smile and act exceptionally gracious to fans, Elijah was asked to pose for a photo with a young girl and boy. He hid his cigarette behind the girl’s back and then after the snap of the “shutter,” said to the girl, “Don’t smoke.”
11. Minnie Driver
Minnie, Minnie, Minnie. You hike, surf and practice yoga. You work out almost every day and you watch your carbs. You’ve cut out sugar and white flour…but you still eat smoke. Do you know something we don’t know?
12. Michael Fassbender
Michael is a fighter. He’s been a Spartan warrior (300), a soldier (Band of Brothers and Inglourius Basterds) and an IRA activist (Hunger). Perhaps his next battle will be to quit the habit.
13. Rihanna
14. Simon Cowell
In his book, I Don’t Mean to Be Rude, But…, the brutally honest reality TV show judge said he gave his first critique to his mum. At age four, he looked at her white fuzzy pillbox hat and remarked, “Mum, you look like a poodle.” Then she said, “Simon. Don’t smoke.”
15. Kristen Stewart
In 2002, she played Jodie Foster’s daughter in Panic Room. As she grew, so did her roles. In 2010, Vanity Fair listed Stewart as the highest-earning female actress while Forbes gave her that credit in 2012, with earnings of $34.5 million. Guess she can afford a few packs of cigarettes.
16. Liam Hemsworth
Former Australian soap actor and box office star, Liam is now known as Miley Cyrus’ significant other. Could be they’re going for the long haul: marriage. (The long haul these days averages about 8 years.) Liam’s family isn’t warm to wild-girl Miley. That could drive a guy to smoke.
17. Brittany Spears
The Mississippi native catapulted to stardom in 1988 with the release of the single “…Baby One More Time.” Spears soared even higher with follow-up albums but also suffered some setbacks, professionally and personally. Maybe that’s when she started smoking.
18. Sienna Miller
Busted. It’s not the first time the actress was unknowingly caught on camera. The first time she received a $75,000 settlement when a British court ruled the tabloids violated her privacy while she was filming Hippie Hippie Shake. This time, she’s in public.
19. Ben Affleck
Poor Ben is another star who can’t get a moment to himself. Here he is at the end of a long-range lense zooming in. The actor and filmmaker is trying to catch a moment to think, and smoke, after speaking with his soon-to-be ex-wife, Jennifer Garner.
20. Lana Del Rey
Elizabeth Woolridge Grant, a.k.a. Lana Del Rey, spent college helping others. She became a hit when the music video for her single, Video Games, became an internet hit in 2011. When she performed the song on SNL, she got a lot of backlash. Perhaps this led to her first smoke.
21. Charlie Sheen
Where to begin? The talented actor is known for his many roles including his co-leading parts in Platoon, Major League and Three Men and a Baby. Sheen is also known for his poor decisions. Like the one between his fingers.
22. Kat Von D
Kat Von D began painting skin when she was 16 years old after she dropped out of school to pursue the profession. Showing tremendous talent, she was brought on to Miami Ink, a reality TV show where she gained national popularity. Smoking goes with the job, doesn’t it?
23. Russell Crowe
Crowe got his lucky break when actress, Sharon Stone, saw him in Romper Stomper and got him to appear in her upcoming flick, The Quick And The Dead. The so-so movie was a stepping stone for the New Zealand native who soon became an American favorite in roles as a gladiator and Nobel-prize winning mathematician. But Russell, smoking just doesn’t add up!
24. Katherine Heigl
The popular actress of the big screen and the little screen (where she won an Emmy for her role on Grey’s Anatomy), Heigl is also dedicated to animal welfare. In addition, she is a public advocate of organ donation. Katherine, doesn’t smoking damage organs?
25. Kit Harrington
Until Kit grew his hair for his role on Game of Thrones, he wore a wig. The descendant of aristocrats, Harringiton is very down to earth. When filming with a broken ankle, he gave the production manager a bottle of whiskey because his busted ankle made the manager’s job harder.
